EROICA AND A HARP
It means heroic in Italian. And when Beethoven wrote his powerful Third Symphony, Eroica, he had Napoleon in mind. . .until he learned that the revolutionary had turned tyrant. Nevertheless, the piece embodies the bold spirit of revolution and will be performed by the Erie Phil on Saturday, November 14 at the Warner Theatre.
Also featured on the program is world renowned harpist Yolanda Kondonassis.
According to The Los Angeles Times, her "colorful harp playing is smooth, resourceful, ever-musical." "It was a performance that confirmed her artistry and affirmed the instrument's solositic personality," according to The Cleveland Plain Dealer. Since making her debut at age 18 with the New York Philharmonic, she has appeared as soloist with numerous major orchestras. As a Telarc recording artist, Kondonassis has won universal critical acclaim for her fourteen discs, which include much of the standard repertoire, as well as her own transcriptions and compositions for harp. Kondonassis will perform Handel’s Harp Concerto and Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro with the Philharmonic.
Classics in the Evening with WQLN’s Wally Faas, a pre-concert discussion, will be presented in the First Niagara Community Room adjacent to the Warner Theatre beginning at 7:15 pm. It is free to ticket holders. Ticket Prices for the show range from $15 - $50. Discounts are available for students, groups, and seniors, and $10 Rush Tickets will be available 15 minutes before show time. Doors open at 7 p.m.
The 2009-2010 season is presented by Scott Enterprises. The Symphonic Series is sponsored by Erie Insurance, WQLN, and JET Radio. This concert is sponsored by BNY Mellon Wealth Management and The Talking Phone Book.
