FAREWELL TO ERIC

FAREWELL TO ERIC

Before Erie Phil Executive Director Eric Borenstein leaves to assume a post with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, he will conduct the orchestra he has known and loved for the past eight years.   Each year a member of our community picks up a conductor’s baton and conducts the Erie Philharmonic through one special piece of music as a way to raise funds for the orchestra and Eric is this year's special guest conductor.  Saturday's concert will be his final event before leaving the Erie Phil.

“While the position with the Virginia Symphony is a wonderful opportunity, leaving Erie is bittersweet, especially at such an exciting time for the orchestra,” Borenstein said. “I am confident that the success the Phil has experienced in recent years will continue. The new executive eirector will be welcomed by an organization operating at a very high level and a caring community. ” The board of directors is currently conducting a search for a new executive director.

Borenstein was hired in Virginia after a six-month national search.  Prior to his tenure at the Erie Philharmonic, he was Executive Director of the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. He also spent six years at the Buffalo Philharmonic in positions in Community Development, Education and Marketing.

If you would like to make a donation in honor of Eric's tenure and his guest conducting this SAturday, please call 455-1375 x 5 or donate here.

YAN NAMED CONCERTO CONTEST WINNER

YAN NAMED CONCERTO CONTEST WINNER

Brian Yan is this year's Jr. Philharmonic Concerto Contest winner.  He was featured in the Jr. Phil's recent  Spring Concert held at Edinboro University.  The orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Robert Dolwick, features students from the tri-state area in grades 6 through 12, who study and perform classical music.

Brian began violin lessons as a 6-year-old in Florida and has been studying violin with Irene Cheng since moving to Erie in 2005. At 9, Brian won the junior division first place prize in the 2006 Erie Music Teachers Association competition.

The 13-year-old son of Eric and Iris Yan, Brian is currently an eighth grader at Walnut Creek Middle School where he is a member of the orchestra. The first Concerto Contest was initiated in 1994 with the support of former Erie Philharmonic Maestro Eiji Oue. It is open to members of the Jr. Philharmonic and the winner is chosen by audition. A cash prize of $300, donated by Maestro Meyer, was given to the winner.

A LOOK BACK

The Erie Phil is gearing up for its 100th Anniversary in 2013 by researching our past and verifying records.  For months, volunteer archivists Mary Jean McEwen and Marian Wygant have been pouring over  Philharmonic information for achival purposes and tracking it electronically.

There are some concert program books that are missing in the archives.  If you have these publications, please contact the Phil at 455-1375.  Missing editions include: September/October and November/December, 1998: February/March 2000; and September/October 2002.
