COME OUT, VIRGINIA

COME OUT, VIRGINIA

It's 8:00 on a Saturday, the Erie Phil crowd shuffles in. . . . to the Warner to hear the music of Billy Joel.

That's right --  If you can't make it to Las Vegas this weekend to hear Billy Joel perform live at the MGM Grand, then the Erie Phil's Pops concert on February 14 is the next best thing.  And you don't have to leave town.

The Piano Man - A Tribute to Billy Joel features your Erie Philharmonic and guest artists Jeans 'n Classics (above).  Pops goers will remember our friends from Ontario, Jeans 'n Classics, as they performed an Elton John tribute concert and a Beach Boys tribute concert with the Phil in recent years.

The countless rock ballads that Billy Joel wrote and performed are the perfect background for a perfect Valentine's Day. . .. Honesty, She's Got a Way, An Innocent Man, and more.   Get your tickets early because the concert is selling quickly!  Call 455-1375 x 4 or visit www.eriephil.org TODAY.  There are a limited number of seats still available!

The concert is presented by Marquette Savings Bank and sponsored by WJET TV and Classy 100.  Our guest artists are sponsored in part by Sheraton Erie.

Are you a fan of karaoke AND Billy Joel?  If so, we'll see you at the Sandbar on Thursday, February 12.  Registration is at 7:30 PM for the karakoe contest at 8:00.  The winner will actually perform on stage with the Phil on Saturday, February 14.

CELEBRATE SPRING WITH CARMINA BURANA

CELEBRATE SPRING WITH CARMINA BURANA

What is that blasted music, ever present on soundtracks (from The Omen to The Bachelor) and in television commercials, surfacing everywhere from the video arcade to the ice skating rink? It is ''Carmina Burana,'' a cantata composed in the 1930's by the German music educator Carl Orff around a group of 13th-century ballads by wandering monks.

On Saturday, March 7, the Erie Philharmonic and the Erie Phil Chorus join forces with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, resident artists from the Pittsburgh Opera and the newly formed Young People's Chorus of Erie to present this passionate and powerful masterpiece.  Set to poetry by Benedictine monks, Carmina Burana celebrates a life lived to the hilt, from love's spring awakening to the joys of imbibing all that life has to offer (monks did invent beer, after all!).

Also on the program that evening, young violin virtuoso Chad Hoopes returns to Erie (you may remember him at our 2007 Holiday Pops).  Thirteen-year-old Hoopes will perform Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto.  Call 455-1375 x 4 for tickets or visit www.eriephil.org.

WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS:  Name a movie (other than the two noted above) that features the music of Carmina Burana.  Be the first to respond to this email.

NOTES FROM THE PREZ

(Deborah Murphy, President, Board of Directors, Erie Philharmonic, discusses her first six months "in office.")

The first few months have been an exciting time.  Half-way through the season and, once again, the Philharmonic is one of the hottest tickets in town.

My goal is to keep the forward progress going and to encourage more people to experience the high quality orchestral music we bring to our region and the value that it brings to our community through such things as quality of life, support of local businesses, etc.

I see the future of the orchestra in continued growth in the Erie market, but hopefully being able to perform out in the region on a greater schedule than what we do now.

Last year we performed in Meadville twice and in Warren once with our holiday concert. Maybe there are some opportunities to perform in those markets, and even other Northwest PA markets, more often.

Our biggest challenge is the same as it has always been, and that is financial. Although we have made great strides over the last couple of years to stabilize the financial base of the Philharmonic, we need to continue to count on our subscribers and donors to help us with their support. It is a difficult economic time for everyone, and we are all doing what we can to make sure every dollar is well used.

So, please continue to support us through your program attendance and your gifts to the Annual Fund. When you are thinking about the next concert, whether it is Pops or Symphonic, why not think about inviting a friend or two to join you. That small gesture can help us reach others in the community who have not had the concert experience and who might see the enjoyment and value in it and become subscribers. My goal is to make every concert a sell out!
