2007 HIGHLIGHTS
Q. What do a silent film, a Celtic celebration, three talented conductors and Barry Manilow have in common?
A. They are all part of the second half of the Erie Phil's 2006-2007 season, of course. What did you think?!
The season's third music director candidate, Paul Haas, will conduct "In the Spotlight" on Saturday, January 27, at 8 pm at the Warner Theatre. Erie Phil's own LeAnne Wistrom, principle flute, will share the spotlight and perform Ibert's Flute Concerto. For any 1812 Overture fans, the Conductor's Choice selection is Tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 4, op 36 in F minor. A more contemporary piece, Songs the Plants Taught Us, by Joshua Penman was commissioned with the New York Youth Symphony with Haas conducting the world premiere performance in Carnegie Hall just less than a year ago. The composer plans to attend the Erie Phil's performance.
Known for his “fiery brilliance” and “bold, muscular, go-for-broke conducting,” Paul Haas is the Assistant Conductor of the Brooklyn Philharmonic and is following in the footsteps of world-renowned conductors such as Leonard Slatkin, as the fourteenth music director of legendary New York Youth Symphony. His recent conducting experiences have included the National Symphony with Itzhak Perlman as soloist and the Rochester Philharmonic among others. He is a graduate of Yale University and the Juilliard School.
You can join the search for the next conductor by attending the concert and providing your input on the candidate's perfromance (at www.eriephil.org/jointhesearch).
Tickets can be purchased online at www.eriephil.org or by calling 455-1375, ext. 4. Tickets start at just $15. Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups.
