PHIL FAMILY NEWS
Board President Christie Ferrier will "guest conduct" at the opening concert of the season on September 29. That’s right! Each year a member of our community picks up a conductor’s baton, takes a deep breath, walks to the center of the stage and conducts the Erie Philharmonic… all to help raise funds for Erie's award-winning orchestra.
Christie has been a committed Phil board member for years and is beginning her second and final year as board chair. The contributions received in honor of Christie’s guest conductor appearance help the Erie Philharmonic continue its 94-year tradition of providing entertaining and enriching music for our region. The gifts also support our educational activities, such as the Jr. Philharmonic and youth concerts for school students.
If you have stopped by the office or called the box office over the last month, you'll have met Eric Marshall. Eric joined the Phil in June as the new Marketing & Development Associate. This new position provides support for the marketing and development departments and also is responsible for the box office. Eric is a recent graduate of Mercyhurst College where he majored in Voice Performance. If you attended the At the Copa concert last February you saw him on stage performing with Gary Mauer.

CLASSICAL MUSIC AND FOOTBALL
From the Daily News (New York) 7/31/07:
Rich Cimini reports from the New York Jets training camp: “Instead of blasting hip-hop, rap and hard rock on their sideline speakers . . . the Jets have altered their playlist, mixing in classical music - namely Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - with their old standbys. It makes for an almost surreal setting: 300-pound men crashing into each other, with gentle melodies in the background.” Cimini writes that head coach Eric Mangini, “always looking for a psychological or physical edge” took inspiration from reports that listening to Mozart can stimulate learning. “The Jets usually play Mozart during the low-intensity drills, when the team splits up into individual units and the coaches are stressing mental work over physical.” Cimini adds, “It's no secret what music the players prefer. ‘Mozart, Beethoven, guys aren't feeling that,’ linebacker
Jonathan Vilma said, smiling.”
You never know. . . .
