AN EVENING OF EXCELLENCE

AN EVENING OF EXCELLENCE

You’ve heard this iconic masterpiece in films such as the Excalibur, Natural Born Killers and even Cheaper by the Dozen. And you can hear it performed live on Saturday, March 7, by your Erie Philharmonic at the Warner Theatre:  Carmina Burana.  The Erie Phil will be joined by the Erie Philharmonic Chorus, the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, artists from the Pittsburgh Opera and the Young People’s Chorus of Erie for a magnificent collaboration.

On Saturday, the powerful and passionate Carmina will employe a chorus of nearly 100 voices, an orchestra of 80 players and a children's choir of 25, plus three soloists (soprano, tenor and baritone).  Get ready to celebrate the coming of spring with Carl Orff's massive paean to a life lived to the hilt, from love's spring awakenings to the joys of imbibing all that life has to offer (monks did invent beer, after all!).

The subject matter covered in Carmina stays fairly basic: love, lust, the pleasures of drinking and the heightened moods evoked by springtime. The music's style ranges from simple chant to almost rock-inspired rhythmic sections. The opening and closing tracks, both titled "O Fortuna," mirror each other: They begin with all forces at full throttle, then immediately scale back in an ominous warning repetition that builds to a climactic close.

And if that weren't enough. . . . you may remember the triumphant debut of young (14 years old) violin virtuoso Chad Hoopes (above) at our 2007 Holiday Pops.  He's back with music of freshness, vigor and inspiration in Mendelssohn's evergreen Violin Concerto.

Saturday evening's Scott Enterprises Symphonic Series concert begins at 8 PM. Concert goers can learn more about the music on the program by attending Classics in the Evening with Wally Faas at 7:15 in the National City Community Room adjacent to the Warner.

Tickets for the show range from $16 - $48. Discounts are available for students, groups, and seniors, and $10 Rush Tickets will be available 15 minutes before show time. Doors open at 7 p.m.

This Scott Enterprises symphonic series concert is presented by Edinboro University and sponsored by Lincoln Metal, Young Erie Professionals, WQLN<Jet 1400 and Sheraton Erie Bayfront Hotel

ORCHESTRAS FEEDING AMERICA

ORCHESTRAS FEEDING AMERICA

One in eight people in our country don’t know where their next meal is coming from. In response to this critical situation, your Erie Philharmonic, and more than 225 orchestras across the nation, will take part in a large-scale national food drive this month in conjunction with the League of American Orchestras, Feeding America, the nation’s largest hunger relief organization, and Participant Media.   Inspired by the upcoming film The Soloist, Orchestras Feeding America, is an unprecedented coordinated effort to collect and donate food to food banks including the area's Second Harvest Food Bank.*

“The story of The Soloist reminds us that classical music has the power to sustain spirits and change lives, even under the most difficult circumstances. Our team effort with Feeding America and The Soloist gives America’s orchestras a way to use that power to make an even greater difference in our communities -- to feed both body and soul,”
Vicki Escarra, Feeding America President and CEO, said. “Feeding America is thrilled that America’s orchestras are joining us in our fight against hunger in America. This partnership will help the hungry in nearly every community nationwide and the 36 million people who are at risk of hunger.”

The Soloist, starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr., will be released by Paramount Pictures to theaters nationwide on April 24.  The film is based on the true story of the relationship between Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez and Nathaniel Anthony Ayers, a gifted Juilliard-trained string player whose mental illness landed him among the homeless on the streets of Los Angeles.

The Erie Philharmonic will offer a 20% discount on Section B & C seating for the March 28 Pops Concert, Swing City, featuring vocal jazz group Monday Off, to anyone who donates a non-perishable item for the food drive.  You can drop off your donation at the Erie Phil office at 609 Walnut St., Monday - Friday, between 9 am and 5 pm.  Donations will also be accepted at Nautilus Fitness Center, 2312 West 15h Street.  Receive a discount coupon there and redeem it for tickets to the show. Subscribers:  we will gladly accept your donations at the Warner on the night of the concert.

ON THE ROAD WITH JR. PHIL

ON THE ROAD WITH JR. PHIL

The Erie Junior Philharmonic spent a memorable day on Saturday, February 28 when, at the invitation of Conductor Daniel Meyer, they journeyed to Pittsburgh for the day. In the afternoon they played on the stage at Heinz Hall with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Meyer. They performed “Russian Sailor’s Dance” together.

Seventy-five parents and friends from Erie attended the concert. After an excellent dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse, the students returned to Heinz Hall for a concert by the Pittsburgh Symphony, under the direction of their new conductor Manfred Honeck. The soloist, Jorge Federico Osorio, performed the Brahms “Concerto No. 1 in D minor for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 15.”  The young musicians thoroughly enjoyed both performing and attending the concert in the beautiful Heinz Hall.

The orchestra would like to express their appreciation to Craig Johnson, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony; Laura Symes, President of the Jr. Phil. Parents' Organization, and Kim Hitchcock, Jr. Phil. Business Manager, for all the work they did to make the day such a resounding success. Noel Burgoyne, Chair of the Jr. Phil., would like to thank the orchestra members for making the Erie Philharmonic Family so proud of them that day!
