FIRST CONCERT OF 2009 THIS WEEKEND
Whether or not your resolution for the New Year includes treating yourself to the wonderful experience of live orchestral music at its finest, the Erie Phil's upcoming concert is surely an opportunity to do just that. On Saturday, January 24, the Phil presents In The Spotlight featuring not only the orchestra's wind section but Mahler's titanic First Symphony.
"Few orchestras can manage the power and passion required to perform Mahler’s epic First Symphony," Executive Director Eric Borenstein said. "Under Daniel Meyer’s baton, the Erie Philharmonic will present our first performance of a Mahler symphony in nearly 10 years."
Featured Erie Phil musicians who will perform Mozart's Serenade for Winds include Danna Sundet and Heather Wible, Oboe;James East and Andrew Seigel, clarinet; John Gillette and Carolyne Wallace, bassoon; and Christopher Rapier and Scott Bohannon, horn.

COLLEGE NIGHT AT THE PHIL
Students from area colleges and universities are invited to attend Saturday's In The Spotlight concert and meet Maestro Daniel Meyer.
According to Executive Director Eric Borenstein, "Student tickets are always only $5 and this weekend we're inviting students to a meet-and-greet with Daniel Meyer and some of our musicians following the performance."
Many music and art appreciation students from Gannon University, Edinboro University, Mercyhurst College and Penn State Behrend regularly attend the Philharmonic's symphonic series concerts.
"Our relationship with the faculty, staff and students at the local colleges and universities is an integral part of broadening our audience," Borenstein added. "We are pleased that the students attend and love when they're part of our audience."
A MIGHTY EVENT
Erie Phil supporters filled out Dennis and Margaret Unks’ Grand Salon—arguably the most unique living room in Erie—at last month’s “Music for the Holidays.”
The benefit concert, featuring entertainer Ken Double at the Mighty WurliTzer, raised over $6,000 for the orchestra. Double, a retired sports broadcaster and standing president/CEO of the American Theatre Organ Society, kept nearly 100 audience-members’ toe tapping throughout the afternoon. The impressive concert featured a mix of traditional organ pieces as well as holiday favorites and more recent pop hits from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Delicious refreshments were served after the concert.
The Unks built their home in an effort to create a suitable, acoustically-rich space for the theater pipe organ; for the organ is no small instrument, but a fantastic collection of parts including two organ chambers housing 1,485 individual pipes, percussion instruments and a Woodward Upright Grand Piano.
The Erie Phil thanks all of our donors for their support and commitment in making this fundraising event a great success. A special thanks to Margaret and Dennis for being such gracious hosts. (Photo above: Ken, on left, and Dennis)
