OPENING NIGHT 95
Get ready to experience a season that promises to expand your universe on Saturday, September 27 with the Erie Philharmonic’s first concert of the new season, the orchestra’s 95th season. Opening Night marks Daniel Meyer’s second season as the Phil’s music director and conductor.
“The season is filled with some of the best music I know with something for everyone,” Meyer said. “From the movie music of John Williams, to the unparalleled Carmina Burana, to the endless hits of Billy Joel, we are ready to showcase the wonderful capabilities of our musicians and guest artists.”
Opening Night features award winner Antonio Pompa-Baldi performing the Grieg Piano Concerto. Born in Italy, Pompa-Baldi was a top prize winner at the 1998
Marguerite Long-Jacques Thibaud Competition of Paris, France, and a silver medal Winner at the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He has toured extensively in four continents and has collaborated with leading conductors. A Steinway Artist, he now makes his home in Cleveland and serves as Distinguished Professor of Piano at the Cleveland Institute of Music.
The concert also features Tchaikovsky’s dramatic Symphony No. 5 and contemporary American composer Michael Daugherty’s Oh, Lois! from Metropolis Symphony composed in the early 1990’s.

SUMMER SERIES A SUCCESS
The young and old alike enjoyed the Get Your Phil at Noon Summer Series in front of the Warner Theatre. In June, July and August an Erie Phil string quartet performed at noon while standing-room only audiences listened and enjoyed a bite to eat. WQLN provided hot dogs for each event and radio host Wally Faas broadcasted live from the Warner. The repertoire included everything from The Beatles to Vivaldi. The three noon concerts were sponsored by Highmark. (At right, three young audience members enjoy Erie Phil coloring books while listening to music.)
TAKE A BOW
Approximately 85 talented musicians from around the region auditioned for various openings in the orchestra earlier this month. Ten positions were awarded.
"Performing as part of the Erie Philharmonic is clearly a coveted position," Conductor Daniel Meyer said. "For the Principal Timpani position alone, there were 18 musicians who auditioned."
Maestro Meyer noted that the Erie Phil conducts "blind" auditions. Judges listened to candidates from behind a screen to remain impartial.
STAFF STUFF
While the concert season was on a summer hiatus, the office staff was still busy both on and off the job.
In April, Development Director Jennifer Farrar "rejoined" the Phil staff and jumped right back in by coordinating the Run for the Tulips event at Presque Isle Downs in May. In addition to her workload at the office, Jennifer is pursuing graduate certification in Nonprofit Management at Mercyhurst College.
Audiences at the Erie Playhouses were treated to the music and dance talents of Marketing Associate Eric Marshall who played Chuck Cranston in Footloose this summer. Fortunately, box office patrons should know that Eric's office personality is nothing like his on-stage demeanor!
If you frequent downtown Erie often, chances are you have run into Executive Director Eric Borenstein on his bicycle this summer. He estimates that he put over 200 miles on his bike, a gift from former boss, Barry Manilow.
In late August Marketing Director Karen Beardsley-Petit joined the ranks of adjunct faculty at Penn State Behrend for the fall semester. The students in her Advertising/Sales Promotion class are mainly senior marketing and management majors.
And finally, the Phil welcomed Carolyn Eller as Development Associate at the same time we bid farewell and best wishes to Operations Manager Elaine Braun (photo above). Elaine retired and has moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she will spend some time with her daughter, son-in-law and one-year-old granddaughter. Elaine wore many hats at the Phil including stage manager, librarian, chorus director and more! Jason Bishop is the new interim director of the Erie Philharmonic Chorus.
