OH, WHAT A NIGHT!
Searchlights and a red carpet across State Street are part of the pre-concert highlights for the Erie Philharmonic’s opening night concert this Saturday, September 29 at the Warner Theatre.
“Daniel Meyer’s debut at the Warner as the new Music Director and Conductor is reason for celebration,” Director of Marketing Karen Beardsley-Petit said. “On top of that, we are pleased to announce that we have an unprecedented 350 new subscribers this season.”
Saturday night’s ticket holders will “walk the red carpet” and be treated to complimentary hors devourers and music by the Jr. Philharmonic. The northbound lanes of State Street will be closed, however patrons may use the southbound lanes as a drop-off point. The pre-concert event will take place in the Warner lobby.
Bold New Beginnings is the Phil’s first concert of the 94th season. Pianist Angela Cheng will perform with the orchestra. Consistently cited for her brilliant technique, tonal beauty and superb musicianship, Angela Cheng is one of Canada's brightest stars. She has appeared as soloist with virtually every orchestra in Canada, as well as the Alabama Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Colorado Symphony, Houston Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Jacksonville Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic, Saint Louis Symphony, and San Diego Symphony. Cheng was the 1986 Gold Medal winner at the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Masters Competition as well as the first Canadian to win the prestigious Montreal International Piano Competition (1988).
In addition, Erie Phil board president Christie Ferrier will officially open the season as a special guest conduct of the Star Spangled Banner. Each year one member of the community takes to the podium and leads the orchestra as a way to raise money for the Philharmonic.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the concert begins at 8:00.
SCOTT ENTERPRISES SPONSORS SEASON
The Erie Philharmonic has received the largest single corporate sponsorship in its 94-year history from Scott Enterprises as they present Music Director Daniel Meyer’s inaugural season.
“As many state and federal agencies continue to cut funding to the arts, this partnership with Scott Enterprises is extremely significant,” Executive Director Eric Borenstein said. “The Scott family has supported the Philharmonic in numerous ways over the years, including board service, ticket purchases, contributions and donated services. The sponsorship of Daniel Meyer’s inaugural season is a fitting testimony to their dedication not only to the Erie Phil, but also to the quality of life in our region.”
The season sponsorship is part of Scott Enterprises “We Promise to Care” campaign which has contributed to many local non-profit groups.
"The Erie Philharmonic contributes to the quality of life in our community by providing great classical music which inspires, entertains and perpetuates the work of the masters,” Nick Scott said.
The Philharmonic was notified in early September of a substantial decrease in funding from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA), which is part of a trend across the Commonwealth. For the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the PCA will grant to the Erie Philharmonic $28,761, down from $41,087 last fiscal year. While the PCA has seen growth in recent state budgets, they have increased the number of grantee organizations by nearly 50% over the last five years, necessitating significant decreases to organizations, like the Erie Philharmonic, that they have supported for many years.
“Considering that just eight years ago the PCA grant amounted to nearly $60,000, it has been a struggle for the Philharmonic to adjust our budget and secure other funding sources. Luckily, hundreds of local individuals and companies, like Scott Enterprises, have helped fill the gaps to ensure the continued strength of the arts in the Erie community,” Borenstein said. “Their support of the Philharmonic enables us to continue to provide live music performed by professional musicians.”
